Fractal drawing is a specific form of art therapy based on simple line and colour drawing. Drawing harmonious images such as fractals helps us calm down, balance our emotions and develop self-confidence. At the same time, we have fun and develop our creativity. It is suitable for adults, and some exercises are also suitable for children.
You don’t need any artistic talent to do this kind of drawing, just the joy of creating. The special feature of this drawing is that it is done with the eyes closed. You stop criticising yourself, you stop worrying about what will come out, you just let yourself draw. Children tend to do this better because it is easier to let go of control. Adults can complicate things
But our creativity and personality only blossom when we stop controlling it. Fractals teach us this and much more.
Not to worry! It’s very simple. You just need an open mind and a willingness to explore. The simplicity of the method ensures that anyone who can hold a pen can participate. In the end, the effort will be rewarded – with a better feeling of well-being, inner peace and confidence because you have made progress and managed to finish the drawings totally by yourself.
Drawing materials are really simple, you can carry them with you and take them everywhere.
What do I need?
- A4 paper,
- a set of at least 24 coloured pencils and
- a thin black pen.
How does this method work?
We all have our own handwriting and if you gave 10 people the same sentence to write, they would each write it differently. It is similar to fractal drawing. Each person creates their own fractal drawing under the same conditions and with the same instructions. The resulting drawing is a “self-portrait” of the person who drew it. Here are some examples 🙂
This drawing tells who you are at this moment. Based on this drawing, we set the further drawing process. You draw your own series of fractal drawings through which this image is transformed. The drawing process aims to gradually transform your drawing into something more yours, more authentic, something that you like and will support you. If you draw small, you learn to draw bigger, if you draw big, you learn to draw smaller, if you use only the same colours, you learn to expand your colour palette. You have fun, develop your creativity, balance your emotions, improve your mental focus and stimulate your motor skills through colouring.
Here are some examples of the participants’ artworks at the beginning and the progress at the end of the cycle:
“I came across fractal drawing quite by chance when I was taking my daughter to Anja’s presentation workshop. Something in the workshop quietly spoke to me. Not right away, but the idea slowly grew in me a few days before I enrolled in Anja’s correction fractals course. My ideas about what I would gain from the course were limited to improving my drawing, getting to know colours… such technical elements that show up in a beautiful drawing. But over time I realized that correction fractals are significantly more than just beautiful drawings. By changing the way the lines we draw on paper, by choosing different colours than we are used to, we bring new dimensions, and new opportunities into life, we get to know our frustrations and through this, we also overcome our fears. Some changes are almost imperceptible but profound, and some are so unexpected that you still find it hard to believe how this is possible. I managed to overcome my fear of the depths of the sea and now I enjoy snorkelling and diving with my children. There are many more of those small changes. With her patience and understanding, Anja creates a pleasant and safe atmosphere where you can open up and create your fractals without judgment. I highly recommend it!”

Who Invented This Method?
Pedagogue, clinical psychologist and family therapist Tanzilia Polujahtova, wanted to find a way to reach the human subconscious without trying to control our responses with the mind. In this way, we get to know ourselves better and get access to information that is located deep within us. With the help of colours and lines and gradual changes in drawing, we also change ourselves.

“I decided to take the course Introduction to the method of fractal drawing because I was interested in how fractal drawings actually work as therapy. How can drawing and coloring fractals help you, what can it bring you? During the first cycle last year, I immediately noticed that I was calmer, happier, more focused on different things than before. With this method, I also got rid of long-lasting grudges against my friend. In last year’s and this year’s cycle, I changed my attitude towards certain colors, especially now I also like dark colors. I also feel other changes in me that I cannot describe. The course definitely helps each participant to become aware of and perhaps eliminate fears, bad habits and thus become more calm, joyful and grateful for having achieved something for a better life. Anja is a great teacher, calm, who knows how to encourage you when you are sometimes “in crisis”. I heartily recommend it.”

“Fractal drawing was my love at first “art”. It opens up so many new possibilities, takes you out of your comfort zone and gently (well, not always so gently) pushes you down the path of evolution. With the intuitive cycle, the palette of all the potentials peeking out, all with a purpose to be realised “
Marjanca“I came across fractal drawing by chance when I was visiting a friend. I thought they were her children’s drawings :). The more I read about fractal drawings, the more interested I was to go down this path. They came into my life at a time when I needed them the most. I was amazed at what I could draw with my eyes closed, how I could colour with my non-dominant hand, how I could subconsciously use a certain colour, how I could always avoid certain shades of colour. But most of all I enjoy drawing and colouring, it calms the body, it calms the mind and it gives birth to new ideas, new beliefs.”

“I became totally fascinated with fractals when I learned that they cleanse harmful patterns and help you to feel your original essence again. They peel away the ballast and bring you back to yourself. Through this, your life changes for the better as a result, and I can attest to that. I was excited to draw grids and paint my first basic cycle. I felt peace, focus and joy while painting. I think I can attribute the migration I wanted to make to the fractals! Something had to shift for this miracle to come my way. In that year I changed flats and got a great job. Fractals are a wonderful technique and I am tempted to do another cycle again. Who knows what turns up this time”
